Set your timer for 10-20 minutes. Use a notebook, sheet of paper or an actual journal and just start writing. Journaling helps you to relax and manage your stress by getting all your thoughts, feelings and worries out and clear your brain.
Journaling is at the forefront in ways to relax. One of the most common complaints from clients is that they are stressed. Journaling gives you a place to express how you feel without worry of judgement or shame. I personally use this method and find it incredibly helpful. My first attempt was placing it in my nightstand and writing before bed, but I eventually discovered that for me setting my timer on my phone for 15 minutes in the morning right when I sit at my desk to be most helpful.
One of the questions clients always ask is “What do I write?” or “How do I start?” It really comes down to how you are feeling or what you want to achieve. I’m big on gratitude so if I feel stuck I start out with “What three things am I most grateful for?” I also use “What are five things that make you happy?” Some journals have built in prompts if you want extra help.
