Week 16 Challenge: The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins

For this week’s, 52 Weeks 7 Day Streaks challenge I chose Mel Robbins The High 5 Habit. Mel Robbins is one of the most booked public speakers who uses her self deprecating life experiences to help others take control of their lives. She simplistically breaks down ways to show people how to move forward and realize it’s a mindset.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Mel Robbins you should definitely read her two books, The 5 Second Rule and The High 5 Habit. The 5 Second Rule basically has you counting backwards like a rocket ship taking off to either get out of bed in the morning, get a task done or just do something you really don’t want to. She is giving you a tool to improve your life one decision at a time.

Mel’s second book that I mentioned, The High 5 Habit, this week’s challenge, addresses how we need to reframe how we think of ourselves and treat ourselves. To me when I practiced this habit it really made me aware of how unkind I can be to myself. It was not easy practicing giving myself a high 5 in the mirror and believing what I was saying. One example she gave in her book because many people ask “what do you say when you high 5 yourself?” was “you are awesome!” For me that didn’t feel genuine or believable when I said it. I started choosing basics like “I’m going to make this a great day” or “I’m going to try really hard to focus on the positives” these felt more realistic to me. I always experiment with our weekly challenges first before introducing them and I definitely felt better by day 5 of practicing this High 5 Habit and really looked forward to what I might say tomorrow.

Mel’s books have so much more to offer then the brief comments I’ve made above and I would highly recommend that you read them or watch her podcast.
